High School Mentoring Program

Project Description:
The Child Safe Michigan High School based mentorship program runs for 26 weeks at a Hazel Park Alternative High School, every Wednesday morning for 1 hour, during the school day and begins in September. Mentoring classes are constructed of 20-24 high school aged youth and 6 mentors with each mentor having a small group of 3-4 youth. Child Safe Michigan staff facilitates a curriculum that is focused on team building, identifying and overcoming obstacles, goal setting and achieving, career exploration, college preparation, along with life skills that include money management, credit and debt coaching, resume building and interviewing skills. Once the daily lesson is given mentors are responsible for guiding the daily activities, with the help of Childhelp staff, in their small groups.

Additional Skills Required:
1. Mentors must be above the age of 24 (preferably a working professional) 2. Mentors must commit to the full 26 weeks 3. Mentors must participate in an interview with Child Safe Michigan Staff and provide three references 4. Mentors must participate in a one time three hour training 5. Mentors must submit to background checks including FBI fingerprinting, Central Registry Clearance, State Criminal Clearance Check, a national and state sex offender check
